Gracejou Michael.
- Talvez fossem aqueles bandidos...

- Não me fale nesses assassinos..."

A mysterious murder in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milano, Italy, is the starting point for this thrilling, involving plot. Accused of killing Brother Abelard, the young novice, Michael, is forced to escape from the convent so as not to be arrested by the police and ends up wrapped in a movie-like chase to escape not only from the police officers but also from the members of a sect of religious fanatics, who imagine the lad has found the place where the fabulous Templar treasure is hidden. After finding three most valuable books in the convent underground, Michael begins to investigate whatever truth could be found in those old manuscripts. To prove his innocence, he will have to unveil the greatest secret of all time, such a terrible secret that the Roman Catholic Church has been keeping it bolted under lock and key for almost one thousand years. After deciphering several clues hidden by the Knights Templar in the “Seven Towers of the Devil”, Michel founds out in horror that it is not only his life that is in danger, but that the fate of all mankind lies in jeopardy.

INTRODUCTION

The novel is set in Europe and was divided into two parts. In the first part, structure always follows the same layout: a chapter in the present, in which the actions connected with the main character (Michael) occur followed by a chapter always in the past whose goal is that of introducing or explaining some historical context. In the second part, the vicissitudes of the protagonist are described in linear order until he reaches his target. There are nineteen chapters altogether.
            The subject runs as follows:
When some women went to Christ’s tomb in the Sunday following His crucifixion, they found the sepulcher open and empty. According to the traditional Christian Church viewpoint, this happened because Christ had risen from the dead. This novel suggests another reason for this. The sepulcher had been violated by the Devil himself, who wanted to take the body of the Son of God down to Hell. A man watched the theft and went out to warn some members of the Essene order, who went themselves to the place where the Devil was hidden and achieved to chain him. Afterward, they took him into a Syrian cavern within which they jailed him so that Satan would stay imprisoned in there for over one thousand years. When Crusaders first conquered Jerusalem in the year, 1099, they found in a house old Essene scrolls relating the Devil’s incarceration. In 1119, the new pope, Calixtus II, took up the task of finding out whatever truth could be found in that old scroll. He summoned together the most intelligent men in Christendom, among them Steven Harding and St. Bernard de Clairvaux, who attested for the authenticity of the document. Then it was decided to create a monkish order with the explicit aim of finding an Essenian chart said to be hidden under the Temple of Solomon, for this map supposedly would reveal the place where Satan was jailed. Those monks came to be known as the Knights Templar.
After spotting the Devil inside his Syrian cave, the Knights Templar brought him secretly to somewhere in Europe, where he remains in captivity down to our days.
Michael is a young postulant in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the city of Milano, Italy, and he chanced to discover in the convent’s basement an ancient, secret Templar library. After reading three of the books he found in there – The Occult Secrets of the Church, The Gospel According to Joseph of Arimathea and The Diary of Jacques de Molay – he became aware of all the above and began to convince himself that the Devil was about to be set free. As a direct consequence, he would exact his long-waited revenge from all of mankind, bringing about the End of Times.
Right on the next day after his discovery, an old friar, Brother Abelard, one of Michael’s best friends, was murdered in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milano and the young man ended up by being accused of committing the crime. Afraid of being arrested, he decided to run away. This is the master line that lends all dynamism to the novel: on the first hand, Michael escaping all the time from his chasers; and, on the other hand, his trying to find out where the Devil is imprisoned, so as to try and prevent his escape from that place to set about the Apocalypse prophecies written by Saint John.
He goes to the Vatican planning to reveal his discoveries to the ecclesiastical authorities, but is never believed and, from that moment on, he begins to be also stalked by religious fanatics connected to the Church’s summit.
When the Knights Templar brought the Devil to the Western lands, they decided to spread out several clues that, once brought together, would disclose the place where they had jailed Satan. Along the novel, Michael finds all these hints in the Seven Towers of the Devil (placed in several European countries, to wit, France, England, Spain, Portugal, and Italy). After deciphering the enigma, he takes himself to the dungeon where the Devil is kept, intending to kill Satan. The end of the novel is indeed surprising and unpredictable.
